How to Calculate Gas Strut Length:

Step 1: Measure the Door Height

Measure the height of the door or hatch in millimeters (mm). For hatch doors, measure from the top side to the bottom side. For boot lids or bonnets, measure from the back side to the front edge.

Step 2: Calculate Expected Gas Strut Length

The recommended gas spring length is approximately 55%-60% of the door’s height. So, for a 1000mm door height, a 550mm-600mm gas spring would be suitable.

Gas Strut Length = Door Height × 0.55~06

How to Measure Gas Strut Length?

If you can locate the installation position of the gas spring, you can calculate its length using the following formula:

a: Horizontal distance from hinge to end fitting 1.

d: Horizontal distance from hinge to end fitting 2.

x: Vertical distance from hinge to end fitting 1.

How do I measure the weight of the cover plate?

To measure the weight of the cover plate, it is ideal to use a scale. However, if weighing the cover directly is not feasible or convenient, the following steps can still help determine its weight:

  • Please open the cover plate and ensure it is in a horizontal position.
  • Make sure that the very edge of the cover plate’s center point is placed in the middle of the scale.
  • The number on the scale, multiply by 2 is the approximate weight of the cover plate.
  • If the cover plate cannot be directly placed on the scale, a support such as a stick can be placed on the scale. Don’t forget minus the weight of stick.
  • Alternatively, a person can stand on the scale and lift the very edge of the cover plate’s center point with their hands to calculate the added weight.
  • If the cover plate is closed in the horizontal position, lift the cover plate slightly until the entire edge of the cover plate is fully lifted. Calculate the added weight.

Please note that for accurate measurements, ensure the weight of the cover plate is measured on a stable platform and that you maintain balance while standing on the scale.

How to Calculate the Gas Strut Force Required?

Gas strut force formula

  • F: Force required
  • W: Cover weight in KG
  • L: Distance between hinge and center of gravity
  • C: Vertical distance between hinge and connection of 2 mounting points
  • n: Number of gas springs to be used
